The Hong Kong Immigration Department announced that starting tomorrow (December 28), it will launch the first phase of the "electronic visa" and electronic visa application services, replacing the current sticker-type labels.

The application categories covered in the first phase include various applications for extending the stay period, as well asforeign domestic helpers,“Non-local Graduate Stay/Return to Hong Kong Employment Arrangement” and “Second Generation Scheme for Chinese Hong Kong Permanent Residents”The entry visa applications for these three categories of people are expected to expand to all visa categories by late next year, accounting for 80% of the Immigration Department's annual visa applications..
Applicants can complete the entire application submission, payment, and collection of electronic visas through the Immigration Department's mobile application or website without having to go to the Immigration Department in person. They can then store the electronic visa on their mobile device or print it out. This measure will provide applicants with more convenient visa services.
The Assistant Chief Immigration Officer (Information Systems) Xu Yiling stated that the Immigration Department will implement the electronic visa application service in phases, with plans to expand the electronic visa application service to all application categories in the second half of next year, achieving full electronicization.
Applicants can complete the entire application submission, payment, and collection of electronic visas using the Immigration Department App or website without having to go to the Immigration Department in person.
At the same time, if applicants stop the application process midway or lose their “electronic visa,” they can also resubmit or download it through the Immigration Department App or website.
Applicants can directly enter information and upload documents on the electronic application form using the Immigration Department APP or website, and receive application result notifications via email. When the application is approved, the email will include an online payment link, allowing applicants to pay using a credit card or payment link.
After completing the payment, applicants can immediately download the PDF version of the “electronic visa” and save it on their personal mobile phone or print it out for use. The electronic visa will also have an encrypted QR code for anti-counterfeiting identification purposes. Those in need can use the Immigration Department App to scan the QR code to check the information and validity of the electronic visa at any time.
After the implementation of the electronic visa, the Immigration Department will stop issuing the current sticker labels. Visas issued after December 28 will be electronic visas, regardless of whether the applicant applied through the APP or website. As for the labels issued before December 28, they will remain valid until the expiration of their validity or stay period.
In addition, Assistant Chief Immigration Officer (Information Systems) Xu Yiling specifically mentioned that non-permanent residents in Hong Kong must verify their stay conditions and duration when handling government procedures. The Immigration Department has notified various government departments that they can verify identity through the QR code on the electronic visa; when applicants enter the country, they only need to show the electronic visa to the immigration staff, who will scan the QR code to process the entry and exit procedures.
