The Overseas Chinese Student Joint Examination has five main characteristics.

First,there are few exam questions, no politics in the liberal arts, and no biology in the sciences;

Second,the exam questions are easy, with 70% of the questions based on middle school knowledge, and the difficulty of the exam questions is similar to that of textbook examples;

Third,the number of applicants is small, competition is low, with an average of about 5,000 applicants each year. However, there are more than 300 schools that enroll students, including prestigious universities like Tsinghua and Peking University, with a total enrollment scale of over 20,000;

Fourth,the admission score is low, with a total score of 750, 400 points can get into a first-tier university, and 300 points can get into a second-tier university;

Fifth,there is a guaranteed fallback option. Even if not admitted, one can apply for a preparatory program and reapply for admission after a year. The national joint enrollment has six examination areas: Beijing, Shanghai, Fuzhou, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, and Macau.

When candidates register online, they cannot change the exam location once selected. Scores are released in early June, and candidates fill in their preferences in late June. For example, in 2021, the score line for ordinary undergraduate programs was 300 points, and the score line for the first batch of admissions was 400 points. Note that getting into Tsinghua or Peking University with 400 points is not a fact; the admission score for Tsinghua and Peking University is around 670 points. However, the difficulty of the exam paper is very low. If a child performs well in high school, it is not a big problem to easily score for a 985 university. If their usual scores in school are at the 985 level, then there is a great opportunity to aim for Tsinghua, Peking University, or Fudan University in the joint examination.
