How to choose should still depend on personal circumstances. However, it is still recommended to keep the account. Some people return to the mainland after settling abroad and eventually retire in the mainland. If they cancel their insurance, the contribution years will need to be accumulated again. Moreover, they can enjoy dual benefits from both the mainland and Hong Kong, providing additional security for their lives.

After obtaining permanent residency in Hong Kong, if the social security contributions in the mainland have reached 15 years, the insured person can return to the mainland to apply for retirement and receive a pension when they reach retirement age, and then live in Hong Kong.

When reaching retirement age, even if one has a Hong Kong or Macau identity, as long as they meet the 15-year contribution requirement, they can still return to the mainland to apply for retirement and receive a pension.

If one insists on giving up mainland social security, they first need to cancel their medical insurance account, which means withdrawing the balance in the medical insurance account in one go. If there are no above-mentioned proof documents, they need to obtain the "List of Reduced Personnel for Basic Medical Insurance" from the medical insurance center.

Then, they need to handle the relevant procedures at the original unit to prove that they have terminated the contract with the original unit.

Hold the original and photocopy of the Hong Kong passport, the original and photocopy of the cancellation of household registration certificate, the photocopy of the ID card, and the employee pension handbook to print out the personal account contribution details at the pension insurance center.

Then go to the original unit to handle the "Social Security Fund Special Receipt" and affix the official seal. After submitting all materials to the pension insurance center for review, finally follow the procedures to receive the funds.

Regarding the housing provident fund.
When handling account cancellation, in addition to the provident fund card, one must also bring (the original and photocopy of the residence passport, the original and photocopy of the cancellation of household registration certificate, or the photocopy of the Chinese passport). After final approval by the provident fund management center, the account cancellation procedures will be successfully completed, and all funds in the account can be withdrawn.
