In Hong Kong, various universities generally issue a dormitory key card to new students at the same time as they register in the dormitory. Each Hall's key card will have some differences in appearance because they are sponsored by different organizations.
As the name suggests, the key card is used to open doors, but in most Hong Kong universities, the key card also has another function: it can be used for value storage (there are usually top-up machines near the Hall) and then used to recharge the air conditioning meter in the dormitory.
