When passing through customs, the mainland customs checks documents issued by the mainland (such as the Hong Kong and Macau travel permit stay visa, tourist visa, family visit visa, business visa, etc., or the Home Return Permit), while the Hong Kong customs checks Hong Kong documents and travel documents (Hong Kong resident identity card, Hong Kong permanent resident identity card, and the Hong Kong and Macau travel permit of mainland travelers, etc.).

Mainland residents who have lived in Hong Kong for 7 years will encounter the following situations when applying for a Hong Kong permanent resident identity card:

1.Only exchange for a Hong Kong permanent resident identity card, without changing the passport or the Home Return Permit. In this case, permanent rights to pass through Hong Kong customs are obtained, but when passing through mainland customs, since there is no Home Return Permit, only the Hong Kong and Macau travel permit can be used. For us IANG holders, since we have changed to Hong Kong permanent residency, the Hong Kong Immigration Department will no longer issue IANG visas, so we cannot return to the mainland with an IANG visa to apply for a stay visa, and can only pass through mainland customs through the following methods:

Tourist visa:Shenzhen household pass to Hong Kong once a week; other local household registrations can apply as needed.

Business visa: If the company has business in both places, there is a chance to apply.

2.Exchange for a Hong Kong permanent resident identity card, while also exchanging for a Home Return Permit + SAR passport. To apply for a Home Return Permit, one must cancel their mainland household registration and can only apply with the receipt from the Public Security Bureau. Therefore, once the Home Return Permit is obtained, in name, one no longer has mainland identity and becomes a complete "Hong Kong person." When returning to the mainland, the Hong Kong permanent resident identity card + Home Return Permit is used, and holding the SAR passport allows visa-free access to 171 countries and regions.

As for the valid Chinese passport, it may still be usable before activating the Hong Kong SAR passport, but this is yet to be confirmed.

3.Exchange for a Hong Kong permanent resident identity card + Hong Kong SAR passport. Before holding the Hong Kong SAR passport to enter or exit China, the passport remains inactive, and this method is used to respond to emergency exit situations.
